A postgraduate trip ended in a homicide investigation
Timothy Adegoke travelled to Ile-Ife in November 2021 for academic purposes connected with his postgraduate studies at Obafemi Awolowo University. He checked into Hilton Honors Hotel and was later reported missing. The criminal investigation that followed focused not only on how he died, but on what happened inside and around the hotel afterward.
This case file avoids unnecessary forensic detail. The legally important issues were the prosecution's circumstantial case, the movement and concealment of Adegoke's remains, alterations to hotel records and the different roles attributed to the defendants.
The 2023 trial separated defendants by evidence and role
On May 30, 2023, the Osun State High Court convicted hotel owner Rahmon Adedoyin and workers Adeniyi Aderogba and Oyetunde Kazeem on the murder case and imposed death sentences. Three other hotel workers were acquitted. Receptionist Adedeji Adesola received a separate conviction for evidence-related offences and was sentenced to two years.
Those different outcomes matter. This page does not treat every employee charged in the case as a murderer, and it does not erase the acquittals simply because the case attracted intense public attention.
The prosecution relied heavily on circumstantial evidence
The prosecution argued that the combined circumstances — including hotel records, actions after Adegoke's death and the handling of his remains — proved the charged offences. The defence disputed the sufficiency of the evidence and argued, among other things, that Adedoyin was not present at the hotel when Adegoke lodged there.
The trial court accepted the prosecution's case beyond reasonable doubt against the convicted defendants. That conclusion is reported here as a judicial finding rather than an independent reconstruction by Crime by Region.
Appeal preserved the murder conviction but narrowed other orders
Adedoyin and two convicted workers appealed. On January 23, 2025, the Court of Appeal in Akure upheld Adedoyin's conviction and death sentence. The appellate court did, however, set aside the trial court's orders forfeiting the hotel and requiring the convicts to finance the education of Adegoke's children.
The distinction is important: reversal of those ancillary orders did not amount to reversal of the murder conviction. Likewise, the absence of a later public Supreme Court judgment in the sources reviewed here does not justify inventing a further appellate outcome.
Timeline
