The Murder of Iniubong Umoren

A job search becomes a criminal investigation

Iniubong Umoren had graduated in Philosophy from the University of Uyo and was looking for work while awaiting national service. On April 29, 2021, she left home after being invited to what she believed was a job interview.

Before leaving, she shared information about the meeting with people close to her. Her disappearance quickly triggered a public search online, where the hashtag used to find her drew nationwide attention. Investigators later recovered her body from property connected to the man who had contacted her.

The evidence at trial

The Akwa Ibom State prosecuted Uduak Akpan for murder and rape. His father, Frank Akpan, and sister, Anwan Bassey, faced separate allegations that they had helped after the crime.

The trial included contested confessional statements. Akpan argued that some statements were involuntary. The trial judge conducted a separate inquiry into admissibility and admitted evidence after rejecting the claim that the police statement had been obtained under duress. The prosecution also presented digital and location evidence through the Department of State Services.

That distinction matters because Akpan changed his position over the course of the case. He initially entered a guilty plea to murder, later denied knowing Umoren, and challenged the circumstances in which statements had been made. The judgment therefore did not simply rest on an early public confession narrative.

The 2022 judgment

On August 4, 2022, Justice Bassey Nkanang of the Akwa Ibom State High Court found Akpan guilty of murder and rape. The court imposed a death sentence for murder and life imprisonment for rape.

Frank Akpan and Anwan Bassey were discharged and acquitted of the charges against them. They are not described on this site as participants in the murder because the court did not convict them.

Why the outcome is classified carefully

The case is placed under Solved / Adjudicated because a full criminal trial resulted in a conviction for Iniubong's murder. However, this review did not locate a later Court of Appeal or Supreme Court judgment resolving any appeal by Akpan. The page therefore does not call the trial judgment the final possible appellate disposition.

That caution also protects against a different error: allegations circulated online after the murder about additional victims or wider criminal activity. Those claims are not folded into this file unless they were established in the prosecution of Iniubong's case.

Current status

Uduak Akpan stands publicly documented as convicted by the Akwa Ibom State High Court for Iniubong Umoren's murder and rape. The two other defendants were acquitted. No later appellate ruling replacing the 2022 judgment was located in this review.

Timeline
