Cynthia's trip to Lagos
Cynthia Osokogu was a postgraduate student who travelled from Abuja to Lagos in July 2012 after communicating online with Okwumo Nwabufo. Prosecutors said she had been lured to Lagos under false pretenses and lodged at a hotel in FESTAC Town.
She was killed on July 22, 2012. The case attracted intense attention in Nigeria because the initial contact had taken place through social media, but the central criminal issue was not the technology itself: it was the alleged plan to isolate, rob and kill Cynthia.
The prosecution
Four defendants were tried: Okwumo Nwabufo, Olisaeloka Ezike, Orji Osita and Ezike Nonso. The prosecution presented witness evidence, circumstantial evidence and material connected to Cynthia's movements and property.
The case lasted several years and included repeated procedural delays before final addresses and judgment. The trial court ultimately treated the evidence against Nwabufo and Ezike differently from the evidence against the other two defendants.
The 2017 judgment
On March 23, 2017, Justice Olabisi Akinlade convicted Okwumo Nwabufo and Olisaeloka Ezike of murder and sentenced both men to death by hanging. Contemporary court reporting described the judge's view that the circumstantial evidence against them was cogent and compelling.
The same court discharged and acquitted Orji Osita and Ezike Nonso. Those acquittals are part of the legal record and are preserved here. They are not overridden by the fact that the men had once been charged.
Why this archive uses a partial status
The trial judgment produced clear criminal convictions against two defendants. However, this review did not locate a later Court of Appeal or Supreme Court judgment that conclusively establishes the final appellate status of those convictions and sentences. Because the user experience should not imply a level of legal finality that the available record does not support, the case is classified Partially Adjudicated.
This classification does not diminish the documented trial outcome. It simply separates what is known — the 2017 convictions — from what was not verified in the sources reviewed — the later appellate endpoint.
