What happened
Shankari Maran worked as a finance manager in Dubai. Court reporting established that former driver Nawas Mohammad believed he was owed approximately Dh45,000 in unpaid salary and had previously complained about the dispute. On July 9, 2011, Maran was killed inside his apartment in Karama.
Friends and relatives became concerned when Maran stopped responding to calls. Police later found him in the apartment and arrested Mohammad in Sharjah. The prosecution argued that the killing had been planned in advance; Mohammad disputed premeditation and at different stages maintained a self-defence account.
Trial and changing sentence
In April 2012, Dubai Criminal Court convicted Mohammad of premeditated murder and imposed the death penalty. That was not the final sentence. The Court of Appeal later reduced the punishment to life imprisonment.
The case then moved through further review. The Court of Cassation at one point sent the case back to the appellate court, which again imposed life imprisonment. Prosecutors sought restoration of the death penalty, while Mohammad challenged the conviction and sentence.
Final appellate outcome
In April 2013, Dubai's Court of Cassation upheld the life sentence. Contemporary UAE reporting described that judgment as final. The conviction therefore remained in force, but the final punishment was life imprisonment rather than the initial death sentence.
This distinction is important because a summary that stops at the first trial would incorrectly describe the ultimate legal outcome.
