What happened
On the second day of Eid Al Fitr in August 2012, a large group of inmates entered the prison area where Ayyoub Abdul Rida was being held. Prosecutors alleged that the attack grew out of a violent rivalry between prison groups and that a smaller number of inmates carried improvised weapons while others helped surround the victim.
Rida died during the attack. The prosecution later argued that it had been planned as retaliation for an earlier confrontation in which another inmate was injured.
The murder prosecution
Eighteen prisoners were charged with premeditated murder. Prosecutors presented witness accounts and prison CCTV, but the central evidentiary problem was identification: the footage did not clearly show which individuals carried out the fatal assault, and witnesses could not reliably distinguish the roles of the many men who entered the area.
In April 2014, Dubai Criminal Court acquitted the 18 murder defendants. The court concluded that the video evidence was not sufficient to identify who had committed the killing. Five additional prisoners who faced attempted-murder charges arising from the broader prison feud were also acquitted on those separate counts.
Appeals and final status
Prosecutors appealed the murder acquittals. In July 2014, the Dubai Court of Appeal upheld the not-guilty verdicts. In October 2014, the Dubai Court of Cassation also upheld the acquittals.
That procedural history matters: the fact that prosecutors alleged specific roles does not permit those allegations to be repeated as established guilt after final acquittals. No person is presented here as the convicted murderer of Ayyoub Abdul Rida.
