The Murder of Alina Ciobanu in Mangalia

The August 2023 killing of Alina Elena Ciobanu drew national attention after investigators established that she had been killed inside a hotel room in the seaside resort of Saturn and that her body had then been transported to Mangalia. The case moved quickly from arrest to prosecution and ended with a final appellate judgment in 2024.

Summer work on the Black Sea coast

Alina Ciobanu and Loredana Atănăsoaie were young women from Vaslui County who were working during the summer season on Romania's Black Sea coast. Public reporting identified them as friends and coworkers staying in the same hotel environment in Saturn, part of the Mangalia resort area.

In the night of August 5 to 6, 2023, a conflict took place in their room. Prosecutors later alleged that Atănăsoaie attacked Alina and caused her death. The court ultimately convicted Atănăsoaie of murder. This page does not repeat unverified private-life claims circulated in early media coverage as a definitive motive.

Transport to Mangalia

After the killing, prosecutors said Atănăsoaie placed Alina's body in luggage and arranged transport by taxi to Mangalia, where it was abandoned beneath a bench in a public park. Reporting on the prosecution states that the taxi driver did not know what the luggage contained.

The investigation also examined conduct after the homicide. Prosecutors accused Atănăsoaie of taking Alina's bank card and using it at an ATM, as well as accessing digital systems without authorization. Those allegations were not merely background claims: they became separate counts in the criminal case.

Arrest and prosecution

Atănăsoaie was arrested and later sent to trial in preventive detention. Prosecutors charged her with murder, aggravated theft, fraudulent financial operations, unlawful operations involving a non-cash payment instrument and illegal access to a computer system.

Because the case involved both the homicide and post-offence financial conduct, the final sentence was calculated from multiple convictions. It is therefore misleading to describe the 16-year total as a single 16-year punishment for murder alone.

First-instance judgment

On April 10, 2024, the Constanța Tribunal convicted Atănăsoaie. Contemporary court reporting records a sentence of 12 years and six months for murder at first instance, plus separate sentences for the other crimes. Under Romania's rules for concurrent offences, the court combined them into an effective total of 15 years and three months.

The judgment was appealable. Both the defendant and members of Alina's family challenged aspects of the decision, meaning the April sentence was not the final legal outcome.

Final appeal in July 2024

On July 4, 2024, the Constanța Court of Appeal issued the final judgment. The court increased the punishment for murder to 13 years. It then applied the statutory combination rule to the other convictions, adding a three-year increase and producing a final effective sentence of 16 years' imprisonment.

The appellate ruling also rejected Atănăsoaie's appeal and left the conviction intact. Established Romanian outlets including Digi24, Adevărul and Libertatea reported the decision as final.

What the court established — and what it did not

The legally established core is straightforward: Atănăsoaie was convicted of murdering Alina Ciobanu and of additional offences involving property, payment instruments and computer access. The final court imposed 16 years.

Media reports also carried detailed accounts of what the two women had argued about before the killing. Unless such claims are necessary to explain a judicial finding, this archive treats them cautiously. A reported argument can provide context, but it should not be converted into a definitive motive without reliable judicial support.
