The 2017 Al-Rawda Mosque Attack

The attack during Friday prayers

On November 24, 2017, worshippers gathered for Friday prayers at Al-Rawda Mosque near Bir al-Abd in North Sinai. Egypt's prosecutor-general said eyewitnesses described roughly 25 to 30 armed attackers arriving in vehicles, surrounding access points and attacking people at and around the mosque.

The initial casualty count rose as hospitals treated the wounded. On November 29, North Sinai health authorities announced that another injured man had died, bringing the death toll to 311. Twenty-seven children were among those reported killed. The same official update recorded 128 people injured.

What prosecutors and witnesses said

The prosecutor-general's early statement was based in part on witness accounts. Witnesses described attackers in military-style clothing and said some carried flags associated with Daesh. Those observations are important evidence about the event, but they are not the same as a judicial finding that a particular organization ordered or executed the attack.

No group publicly claimed responsibility in the immediate aftermath. Most major militant attacks in North Sinai during that period had been associated with the local Daesh affiliate, but the absence of a claim and the lack of a definitive public criminal judgment means the archive does not convert that broader context into a finding of guilt.

The state response

Egypt declared national mourning and intensified security operations in North Sinai after the massacre. The State Information Service and presidency publicly condemned the attack as terrorism.
