The attack
Before dawn on December 4, 2015, attackers threw Molotov cocktails at the entrance of the Al-Sayyad restaurant and nightclub in Agouza, a district of Giza within greater Cairo. The venue was in a basement. Fire and smoke at the entrance left people inside with few viable routes of escape.
Egypt's Interior Ministry initially reported at least 16 deaths. Later prosecution and court coverage frequently gave a total of 17. Ahram Online reported in 2016 and 2017 that all of the victims were employees of the establishment and that investigators found an emergency exit had been chained shut, worsening the consequences of the fire.
The dispute and investigation
Authorities said the attack followed a dispute the previous night after some of the eventual defendants were refused entry by security staff. Police described the firebombing as retaliation. Two suspects were arrested in Suez shortly after the attack; additional arrests followed.
Contemporary reports attributed admissions to some suspects during the investigation. Those statements are not treated here as the sole basis for responsibility. The later murder convictions, the prosecution's case and the final legal outcomes provide the stronger basis for classifying the case as adjudicated.
Charges and trial
In January 2016, prosecutors charged four men with murder in connection with the arson. In August 2017, a Giza criminal court convicted four defendants and imposed death sentences. Ahram identified them as Mohamed Emad Mohamed Ali, Mohamed Abdel Rahman, Mohamed Gamal and Mahmoud Said.
The court record reported by Ahram treated the Molotov attack as deliberate retaliation after the entry dispute. The locked emergency exit was presented as a factor that contributed to the death toll, but responsibility for the attack itself was attributed to the convicted defendants.
Executions in 2020
On October 28, 2020, Egyptian authorities executed the four convicted men. Ahram's report on the executions described the case as the killing of 16 people, while Egypt Independent on the same date described 17 deaths. The discrepancy is therefore not simply an early-news error; it persists in later reporting and is retained here as an unresolved numerical difference.
Victims and public record
Most accessible English-language reporting does not provide a complete verified list of the victims' names. Rather than inventing or reconstructing identities from informal lists, this dossier records only what reliable sources consistently support: the victims were people working inside the club, and the attack caused a large loss of life in a confined basement space.
The case is documented as a criminal arson and murder prosecution, not as terrorism. No evidence reviewed for this dossier supports attaching an ideological motive beyond the retaliatory dispute described by investigators and the prosecution.
