The killings in Al-Nada compound

In the early hours of November 27, 2008, Heba El-Akkad and her friend Nadine Khaled were found killed inside Nadine's residence in the Al-Nada compound in Sheikh Zayed City. Reporting at the time described missing cash and mobile phones, and prosecutors treated theft as part of the alleged motive.

The case drew exceptional public attention because Heba was the daughter of Moroccan singer Laila Ghofran. That attention also produced harmful speculation about the victims. Daily News Egypt reported that several newspapers later apologized for unfounded allegations. Those claims have no place in a factual case file.

Mahmoud Essawy is charged

Investigators arrested Mahmoud Sayed Abdel-Hafez Essawy, then a young blacksmith from Cairo. Prosecutors accused him of entering the residence to steal and killing the two women. Essawy denied the murders at trial and said his earlier statements had been extracted under pressure.

The prosecution relied on a combination of statements, reconstruction material and forensic evidence. The defense challenged the integrity of that evidence, including blood evidence associated with an undershirt and the circumstances in which samples were taken. Because those disputes later mattered to the appellate history, this archive does not present the first trial as an uncontested evidentiary record.

First conviction and death sentence

In 2009, the Giza Criminal Court convicted Essawy and imposed a death sentence. Under Egyptian procedure, the death recommendation was referred to the Grand Mufti before formal confirmation. Essawy's defense announced an appeal.

The speed of the first proceedings and the contested forensic record remained central issues in the defense challenge. In February 2010, Egypt's Court of Cassation overturned that death sentence and ordered a retrial before a different panel.

The retrial

The retrial did not amount to an acquittal. It required a new court to reconsider the prosecution case and the defense objections. During the renewed proceedings, the trial judge revisited the evidence and even inspected the crime scene.

On June 16, 2010, the Giza Criminal Court again convicted Essawy and again sentenced him to death. Essawy continued to maintain that he was innocent and filed a second cassation challenge.

Final Court of Cassation ruling

On October 26, 2011, Egypt's Court of Cassation rejected Essawy's second appeal and upheld the death sentence issued after the retrial. Egyptian coverage published the following day described the decision as the final rejection of his challenge to the second capital judgment.

The reviewed sources establish the final judicial outcome without requiring this archive to claim more than the record supports. This page therefore records a final conviction and death sentence; it does not state that the sentence was carried out because the sources reviewed for this update were used to document the adjudication rather than a later execution record.
