A request for a phone number

According to the findings summarized by the Supreme People's Court, Zhang Fan, Zhang Lidong, Lyu Yingchun, Zhang Hang, Zhang Qiaolian and a 12-year-old boy were together at a McDonald's restaurant in Zhaoyuan, Shandong, on May 28, 2014.

The court record says members of the group were asking customers for contact information as part of efforts to recruit people into a religious organization that Chinese courts classified as a cult. Wu Shuoyan refused to provide her telephone number. The encounter escalated and Wu was attacked inside the restaurant. She died at the scene.

What the courts found

The adult defendants were prosecuted for intentional homicide, and some also faced the offense of using a cult organization to undermine law enforcement. The court described Zhang Fan as an initiator and organizer of the fatal attack and Zhang Lidong as one of its principal participants.

Because the crime took place in public and was witnessed by other customers, the case attracted intense national attention. This page deliberately omits graphic details that are unnecessary to understand legal responsibility.

Trial and sentences

On October 11, 2014, the Yantai Intermediate People's Court convicted the five adult defendants. Zhang Fan and Zhang Lidong were sentenced to death for intentional homicide and the cult-related offense. Lyu Yingchun received life imprisonment. Zhang Hang received ten years' imprisonment for intentional homicide, and Zhang Qiaolian received seven years.

The defendants appealed. On November 28, 2014, the Shandong High People's Court rejected the appeals and upheld the original judgments. Because the case included death sentences, those portions were then submitted to the Supreme People's Court for mandatory review.

Supreme People's Court review

The Supreme People's Court approved the death sentences for Zhang Fan and Zhang Lidong. In its published account, the top court said the evidence established that both were principal offenders in the intentional killing and that the first- and second-instance judgments were legally supported.

On February 2, 2015, after the approval process was complete, the Yantai Intermediate People's Court executed Zhang Fan and Zhang Lidong. The other adult defendants continued under the prison sentences imposed by the courts.

Religious identity and source discipline

Chinese judicial reports identify the defendants as members of a group they described using the name "Almighty God" and legally treated the organization as a cult. Those findings are part of the official case record and are relevant to the charges and sentencing.

At the same time, a criminal archive should not infer that every person who uses a similar religious label shares the defendants' beliefs, organizational ties or responsibility. This file therefore attributes the membership classification specifically to the courts and focuses on the convicted individuals and the acts for which they were judged.

The victim at the center of the case

Wu Shuoyan was 35 years old. Much reporting about the case focused on the defendants' ideology and the unusual public setting, but the central fact is that Wu was a customer who declined to provide personal contact information and was killed. Her refusal did not create responsibility for what followed.
