The attack
On January 14, 2016, a series of attacks struck the commercial area around Jalan MH Thamrin in Central Jakarta. Indonesian authorities ultimately recorded eight deaths: four civilians and four attackers. Later police reporting corrected early confusion about one civilian victim who had initially been suspected of involvement.
The distinction matters editorially. The four attackers who died are not counted here as victims of the crime, and preliminary casualty reports are not treated as the final record.
Investigation
Police pursued a wider network after the attack and arrested people suspected of helping with planning, logistics or facilitation. The investigation was not limited to the four men who died at the scene.
Later prosecutions produced different sentences according to each defendant's role. Reporting from the Jakarta courts documented prison terms for several people linked to the Thamrin case rather than treating every defendant as an on-site attacker.
Aman Abdurrahman
In 2018, Aman Abdurrahman was tried in South Jakarta on terrorism charges covering several attacks, including Thamrin. The court found him guilty beyond reasonable doubt of inciting others to commit terrorism and sentenced him to death on June 22, 2018.
Aman denied personal responsibility for the attacks, but the panel rejected that defense based on the evidence presented at trial. The judgment did not depend on a claim that he was physically present at Thamrin.
Finality of the sentence
On June 29, 2018, Aman's lawyer confirmed that neither Aman nor his defense would appeal. Prosecutors also did not appeal. Indonesian reporting therefore described the death sentence as having obtained final legal force.
This page does not claim that the sentence has since been carried out. The verified point is the final 2018 judgment; no later execution is asserted without specific reliable documentation.
