The Murder of Brigadier J

The killing and the first official story

Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat, widely known as Brigadier J, served as an aide to Inspector General Ferdy Sambo, then head of the National Police's internal-affairs division. Yosua was killed on July 8, 2022, at Sambo's official residence in South Jakarta.

The earliest police account described a shootout between Yosua and another aide, Richard Eliezer. That account did not survive the special investigation ordered amid growing public scrutiny. In August 2022, the National Police publicly stated that investigators had found no exchange of gunfire and alleged instead that Sambo had ordered Eliezer to shoot Yosua and had helped stage the scene to resemble a confrontation.

A murder case becomes a police scandal

The case expanded beyond the killing itself because investigators found evidence of an attempted cover-up. Prosecutors alleged that Sambo manipulated the scene and electronic evidence and involved other people in creating a false account of what happened. The proceedings therefore examined both the premeditated murder and conduct intended to obstruct or distort the investigation.

Trial judgments

On February 13, 2023, the South Jakarta District Court found Ferdy Sambo guilty of participating in premeditated murder and of unlawfully interfering with an electronic system in connection with the cover-up. The trial court sentenced him to death. Other defendants received separate sentences based on their own roles, including Sambo's wife Putri Candrawathi, Ricky Rizal, Kuat Ma'ruf and Richard Eliezer.

The distinctions matter. The court did not treat every defendant as having identical conduct. Richard Eliezer, who admitted shooting Yosua and cooperated with investigators, received an 18-month sentence at the district-court level. The other convicted defendants received longer prison terms.

The Supreme Court makes the sentence final

On August 8, 2023, Indonesia's Supreme Court decided case No. 813 K/Pid/2023. It upheld Sambo's premeditated-murder conviction but reduced his death sentence to life imprisonment. The court also reduced the sentences of Putri Candrawathi, Ricky Rizal and Kuat Ma'ruf. Contemporary reporting described the Supreme Court ruling as final and binding.

The current legal status of the central murder case is therefore clear: Ferdy Sambo remains convicted of the premeditated murder of Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat and is serving a life sentence. This page does not convert public speculation about motive into judicial fact beyond what the courts established.
