Rose's disappearance
Rose Pizem was four years old when she disappeared in 2008. She had been born in France and later lived in Israel in a complicated family arrangement involving her mother, Marie, and Marie's partner Ronny Ron, who was also Rose's paternal grandfather.
Rose was last seen in May 2008, but authorities were not alerted immediately. By August, once police learned she was missing, the case triggered a major search involving investigators and volunteers. In September 2008, Rose's remains were found inside a suitcase recovered from the Yarkon River.
Investigation and competing accounts
Ron gave investigators changing accounts. At trial he acknowledged causing Rose's death but argued that it had not been intentional. Marie denied that she intended her daughter's death. Prosecutors, however, presented communications and surrounding circumstances that they said showed both adults wanted Rose removed from their lives and acted together toward that outcome.
The courts had to separate those claims from proven criminal responsibility. The Central District Court found Ron guilty of intentional murder. It initially found Marie guilty of soliciting the murder rather than personally committing it.
Convictions and life sentences
On May 19, 2011, the district court convicted Ron of murder and Marie of solicitation to murder. In June 2011, both received life sentences. Their legal positions were not identical at that stage: Ron was the convicted murderer, while Marie's liability rested on solicitation.
Both defendants appealed. Ron sought to overturn or reduce his murder conviction and, in later argument, attempted to shift responsibility to Marie. The state, meanwhile, challenged the narrower legal characterization of Marie's role.
The 2014 Supreme Court ruling
On December 11, 2014, Israel's Supreme Court rejected Ron's appeal and left his murder conviction in place. The court also accepted the state's position concerning Marie and convicted her as a joint perpetrator of the murder rather than merely a solicitor. Her life sentence remained unchanged.
The final appellate outcome therefore matters to the site's classification: both Ronny Ron and Marie Pizem ultimately stood convicted of Rose's murder, with life imprisonment remaining in force.
