The Dawabsheh family

Shortly before dawn on July 31, 2015, the Dawabsheh family's home in Duma was attacked with a firebomb. Ali Saad Dawabsheh, who was 18 months old, died in the fire. His father, Saad, died from his injuries in August, and his mother, Riham, died in September. Their older son Ahmed survived.

Hebrew graffiti was found at the scene, including a revenge message. Israeli authorities investigated the attack as ideologically motivated violence. The deaths of three members of one family belong to a single criminal event and are therefore documented in one case file rather than split into multiple pages.

Investigation and prosecution

Amiram Ben-Uliel was charged in connection with the firebombing. The investigation later became legally significant because some statements made during Shin Bet interrogations were excluded after courts examined the methods used to obtain them. The criminal case did not end there: other statements and evidence remained before the court.

A second defendant, who was a minor at the time of the attack and whose identity was protected, was not convicted of the three murders. He ultimately admitted conspiracy and other racially motivated offenses in a plea arrangement and received a separate prison sentence. This dossier does not merge his liability with Ben-Uliel's murder convictions.

Conviction and sentence

On May 18, 2020, the Lod-Central District Court convicted Ben-Uliel on three counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder and arson-related offenses. The court found that the attack was motivated by extremist ideology and racism.

On September 14, 2020, Ben-Uliel received three cumulative life sentences plus an additional 20 years. Israel's national human-rights report later recorded the sentence and compensation orders, as well as the separate disposition of the second defendant.

Supreme Court appeal

Ben-Uliel appealed his conviction to Israel's Supreme Court, arguing in part that statements following abusive interrogation methods should not have been used. On September 1, 2022, the Supreme Court rejected the appeal. The court distinguished between statements previously excluded and a later confession and reconstruction that it considered legally admissible, leaving the murder convictions and sentence intact.

A subsequent request for a retrial was also rejected in 2023. The site's classification rests on the completed murder conviction and appeal, not on political characterizations made outside the judicial record.
