Five people killed in Kitzbühel
On October 6, 2019, five people were killed at a family home in Kitzbühel. Austrian court reporting identified the victims by their relationships to the defendant: his 19-year-old former partner, her parents, her 23-year-old brother and a 24-year-old man who was with her.
The defendant later presented himself to police. Reporting on the subsequent criminal case described the killings in the context of the end of his previous relationship, but this page does not reduce the victims to a claimed motive or repeat sensationalized details of the attack.
The trial in Innsbruck
The case was tried before a jury court at the Innsbruck Regional Court. The defendant pleaded guilty at the beginning of the trial. On August 12, 2020, the jury unanimously found him guilty of all five murders.
The court imposed life imprisonment. Austrian reporting on the judgment also noted that psychiatric evidence found him criminally responsible at the time of the offences.
The judgment became final
The initial judgment was not yet final on the day it was announced because the defense had time to consider legal remedies. That changed one week later.
On August 19, 2020, ORF and the Austria Press Agency reported that the defendant had filed neither an appeal against the sentence nor a nullity complaint. The life sentence therefore became final.
