The killing in Steyr
Michelle F. was killed in her family home in Steyr in December 2018. Investigators focused on her teenage boyfriend, who fled after the killing and later surrendered to police in Vienna.
At first he described the death as accidental. The prosecution rejected that explanation, and forensic evidence presented at trial supported an intentional killing.
Trial and evidence
The case was tried before a jury at the Regional Court in Steyr in October 2019. The jury unanimously found the defendant guilty of murder. Audio material recovered from phones formed part of the evidentiary record, but this page does not reproduce disturbing recordings or unnecessarily graphic evidence.
The court imposed a sentence of thirteen and a half years. Because the defendant was seventeen at the time of the crime, the applicable sentencing framework was the juvenile one rather than the adult maximum for murder.
Appeals
The defense challenged both the conviction and sentence. In March 2020, Austria's Supreme Court confirmed the murder verdict. The remaining sentencing appeal went to the Higher Regional Court in Linz.
On May 27, 2020, that court rejected the remaining remedies and left the thirteen-and-a-half-year sentence intact. Austrian reporting described the judgment as final at that point.
