The Kevin Dahlgren Brno Family Murders

On May 22, 2013, four members of a family were killed in Brno-Ivanovice. American citizen Kevin Dahlgren, who was staying with the family and was related to them, left Czechia shortly after the killings. Czech authorities sought his return from the United States, beginning an unusually prominent extradition case that ended with his prosecution in Brno.

The victims and the crime

The victims were a married couple and their two sons, one of whom was a minor. Czech reporting consistently identifies Dahlgren as a relative who had been temporarily living with the family. After the killings, a fire was set in the house. This dossier does not reproduce graphic descriptions of the injuries or the scene.

The criminal case ultimately established Dahlgren's responsibility for all four murders. Motive was discussed extensively during the proceedings, but this page does not reduce the killings to a single speculative psychological explanation. The courts focused on evidence, criminal responsibility and the severity of the acts.

Flight and extradition from the United States

After leaving Brno, Dahlgren traveled through Austria and boarded a flight to the United States. He was arrested at Washington Dulles International Airport on May 23, 2013 on the basis of a Czech warrant.

U.S. courts later approved his extradition. He was transported to Czechia on August 31, 2015. Contemporary Czech reporting described him as the first U.S. citizen extradited by the United States to the Czech Republic for criminal prosecution, making the case significant not only for its violence but also for its international legal path.

Trial, criminal responsibility and sentence

The Regional Court in Brno found Dahlgren guilty in July 2016 and imposed life imprisonment. Expert evidence about his mental condition became a major issue at trial. Czech experts concluded that he suffered from a personality disorder but was criminally responsible for his actions; the defense disputed parts of the psychiatric assessment.

The High Court in Olomouc rejected his appeal in March 2017, making the life sentence final. The appellate proceedings did not overturn the finding of guilt. Dahlgren later pursued an extraordinary appeal to the Supreme Court, seeking a different punishment or secure detention rather than contesting the underlying conviction.

Death in prison and the final appeal

On January 11, 2018, while serving his life sentence at Valdice Prison, Dahlgren died by suicide. Czech authorities investigated the circumstances of his death. The General Inspection of Security Forces later found no criminal offense by a prison officer, although the prison subsequently addressed an internal rules violation through disciplinary proceedings.

Because the extraordinary appeal had already been filed, the Supreme Court still ruled on it after Dahlgren's death. In early 2018 the court rejected the appeal as manifestly unfounded and left the lower courts' legal and factual conclusions intact.
