Juana Barraza, "La Mataviejitas"

Juana Barraza, a former professional wrestler known by the ring name "La Dama del Silencio," murdered at least 16 elderly women in Mexico City between 1998 and 2006, earning the media nickname "La Mataviejitas" ("The Little Old Lady Killer"). She gained entry to victims' homes by posing as a nurse or government social worker.

Investigation

The string of similar killings of elderly women living alone drew significant media attention in Mexico City for years before Barraza was caught. She was arrested in 2006 after being seen fleeing the scene of one of her attacks.

Trial and sentence

Barraza was convicted in 2008 of multiple murders and sentenced to a combined 759 years, though Mexican federal sentencing rules at the time capped the effective maximum time served considerably lower than the nominal term.

Current status

Barraza remains imprisoned in Mexico.
