A night by the lake
John Hron was 14 when he went camping with a friend at Ingetorpssjön outside Kode, north of Gothenburg, during the final days of the 1995 summer holiday. Four youths associated with neo-Nazi or far-right circles arrived at the area.

Four youths were convicted
All four youths involved were convicted. A recent SVT retrospective states that two were convicted of murder, one of aggravated assault and one for failing to alert police despite having the ability to do so.
Sveriges Radio's tenth-anniversary reporting records prison sentences of five and eight years for the two teenagers convicted of murder. The different offences and sentences matter: it would be inaccurate to call all four convicted youths murderers in the legal sense.
The extremist context
Swedish sources consistently describe the perpetrators as young Nazis, neo-Nazis or youths with links to far-right extremist groups. The murder became one of the most widely remembered cases associated with Sweden's wave of racist and neo-Nazi violence in the 1990s.

A lasting public legacy
John's parents later spoke at schools about violence, racism and the consequences of hate. The case also became a reference point for the Tolerance Project developed in Kungälv, an educational initiative intended to counter intolerance, racism and recruitment into violent extremist environments.
SVT reported in its 2025–2026 retrospective that a prize in John Hron's memory has been awarded since 1996 to recognize civil courage and work against violence and racism.
