Security worker Ilídio Correia was killed during a violent period in Porto's nightlife scene. A major prosecution known as Noite Branca later resulted in four named defendants being convicted over his murder and related attempted murders, with the principal appeal sentence reaching 24 years.
Ilídio Correia, 33, was a security worker associated in contemporary reporting with Porto's Miragaia nightlife group. He was killed near the Alfândega do Porto in the early hours of November 29, 2007. The homicide became the central murder charge in the large Noite Branca prosecution, a case built around a broader sequence of violent confrontations that had shaken Porto's nightlife during 2007.
Portuguese reporting described 2007 as a period of escalating violence involving rival groups connected to private security and nightlife businesses in Porto. Ilídio Correia's death was one of several killings investigated during that period. Authorities and journalists commonly referred to the wider police and prosecutorial effort as the Noite Branca case.
For this file, that wider context is kept separate from the adjudicated murder. Other killings from the same period, including the deaths of Aurélio Palha and Alberto Ferreira, were discussed in reporting on the investigation but were not part of the convictions summarized here. They are therefore not folded into Ilídio Correia's case to inflate victim or conviction counts.
According to RTP and Lusa reporting, Correia was killed on November 29, 2007 near Porto's Alfândega. The prosecution alleged that a group linked to the Ribeira security scene mounted an ambush against Correia and companions. Five attempted murders were also tried in connection with the gunfire directed at people who were with him.
Contemporary reports also described previous confrontations between the rival groups. Those reports are useful context, but they do not justify assigning a single definitive personal motive beyond what the court found: coordinated violence against Correia and the people with him.
The Noite Branca murder trial began in September 2009 under heavy security. Five defendants were accused of qualified murder in Correia's death, together with attempted-murder and related counts arising from the same violent episode and other confrontations.
On January 19, 2010, the court found Bruno Pinto, known as “Pidá,” Fernando Martins, Mauro Santos and Ângelo Ferreira criminally responsible in the murder. Reporting on the judgment described a fifth participant whose identity the court was unable to establish. Fábio Barbosa, another defendant tried in the case, was acquitted.
At first instance, Bruno Pinto received an aggregate prison term of 23 years. Fernando Martins received 22 years, while Mauro Santos and Ângelo Ferreira received 21 years each. The sentences reflected not only the murder conviction but also related attempted-murder and other offenses for which individual defendants were convicted.
On December 2, 2010, the Porto Court of Appeal increased Pinto's aggregate term from 23 to 24 years and Martins's from 22 to 23 years. The appeal court maintained the 21-year sentences for Santos and Ferreira and preserved Barbosa's acquittal.
The criminal judgment established responsibility for Ilídio Correia's murder and related attacks for the convicted defendants. It does not mean that every killing or violent episode reported under the broad “Noite Branca” label was solved by this trial.
That distinction is important because Portuguese news coverage often used Noite Branca as an umbrella term for multiple investigations. This page treats Ilídio Correia's murder as a separate adjudicated case and does not attribute unrelated unsolved killings to the men convicted here without a corresponding judgment.
Porto experiences a series of violent incidents and killings connected in reporting to rival nightlife-security groups.
Correia is shot near the Alfândega do Porto. Several people with him are also targeted.
Five defendants go on trial on qualified-murder and related charges under heavy security.
Four named defendants are convicted over Correia's murder; another defendant is acquitted.
The Porto Court of Appeal raises Bruno Pinto's aggregate sentence to 24 years and Fernando Martins's to 23, while maintaining the remaining principal outcomes.
The murder of Ilídio Correia is classified here as solved / adjudicated. Four named men were convicted over the killing, and their principal aggregate sentences were either maintained or increased on appeal. This classification applies only to Correia's murder and the adjudicated charges in this prosecution, not to every violent case discussed historically under the Noite Branca label.
The Noite Branca investigation covered a broader period of violence. This page does not merge unsolved killings from that period into the Correia case and does not treat acquitted defendant Fábio Barbosa as guilty.
