The abduction
In the early hours of May 27, 2017, Hannah Cornelius and Cheslin Marsh were in Cornelius's car in Stellenbosch when four men confronted them. The Western Cape High Court later found that the group robbed and kidnapped the two students and drove away with them.
Nashville Julius left the group before the later crimes against Cornelius and Marsh. That distinction became central to the verdict: the court convicted him of robbery and kidnapping, but not of Cornelius's murder or sexual assault.
Marsh survives; Cornelius is killed
Marsh survived a later attempt on his life and became an important witness to the sequence of events. Cornelius was kept by the remaining three men and was later murdered. Her death prompted an intensive police investigation that linked the suspects to the stolen car and to further robberies committed during the same period.
The archive deliberately does not restate the most graphic facts presented at trial. They are not necessary to understand why the court found the violence intentional or why the sentencing court considered the crimes exceptionally serious.
The trial and individual responsibility
In November 2018, Judge Rosheni Allie of the Western Cape High Court convicted Eben van Niekerk, Geraldo Parsons and Vernon Witbooi of the rape and murder of Cornelius and the attempted murder of Marsh. The judgment also convicted the men on robbery and kidnapping charges arising from the same course of conduct.
Nashville Julius was convicted on the robbery and kidnapping counts for the part he played before leaving the group. The court's written judgment emphasized that criminal responsibility had to follow the evidence against each accused rather than treating all four as interchangeable participants in every later offense.
Sentences
On November 12, 2018, Van Niekerk, Parsons and Witbooi received life sentences for Cornelius's murder and life sentences for the sexual offense against her, alongside lengthy sentences for attempted murder, robbery and kidnapping. Julius received an effective 22-year term for the offenses of which he had been convicted.
In February 2019, the trial judge rejected Julius's application for leave to appeal his conviction and sentence. In the sources reviewed for this update, no later judgment was identified that overturns the murder convictions or life sentences of the three principal defendants.
