Senzo Meyiwa

Senzo Meyiwa was one of South Africa's best-known footballers. He played goalkeeper for Orlando Pirates and captained Bafana Bafana, the South African national team. His killing at age 30 produced intense public scrutiny of the police investigation and, later, of the criminal proceedings.

The killing

On October 26, 2014, Meyiwa was shot at a home in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg. Several people were present. Early accounts described an apparent robbery or intrusion, but the exact sequence of events and the identity of the person who fired the fatal shot became the subject of a prolonged investigation.

Because witness accounts, forensic evidence and later police theories have been contested in court, this archive does not reconstruct disputed moments inside the house as settled fact.

Years before trial

The case remained under intense investigation for years. In 2020, prosecutors announced charges against five men. Their prosecution eventually moved to the Pretoria High Court. The accused have denied responsibility, and the trial has included challenges to witness evidence, alleged confessions, identification evidence and forensic material.

The prosecution case

The five accused face charges that include murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and firearm-related offenses. The National Prosecuting Authority has argued that the evidence is sufficient to require answers from the accused. A court ruling on a section 174 application found a prima facie case requiring accused number four to present a defence; that ruling was not a finding of guilt.

The trial record has included testimony about ballistic evidence, cellphone records, alleged confession statements, police procedures and witnesses linked to the investigation. Defence lawyers have challenged major parts of that evidence and have raised questions about how statements were obtained and how the case was constructed.

The defence case in 2026

By 2026, the trial had moved deeply into the defence phase. Several accused and defence witnesses gave evidence, and disputes continued over statements attributed to witnesses and the possible introduction of additional prosecution material.

On August 25, 2026, SABC News reported that Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng was expected to rule on whether the State could introduce additional cellphone records for use in cross-examining accused number three, Mthobisi Mncube. SABC's report confirmed that Mncube and four other men remained on trial for Meyiwa's murder. This was the most recent procedural development located in this review and confirms that the case remains actively before the High Court rather than adjudicated.

Why the case is still unsolved in this archive

Five people are on trial, but no court has yet issued a verdict deciding whether any of them committed the murder. The existence of charges, a prima facie case or disputed evidence does not permit this archive to label an accused person a murderer. Until a judgment establishes criminal responsibility — or the case otherwise reaches a reliable legal conclusion — the correct classification is unsolved / active trial.
