Chukwudumeme “Evans” Onwuamadike: Kidnapping Convictions

The public profile surrounding “Evans” combined multiple investigations and court cases, creating a risk of treating every allegation as if it had already been proved. The reliable record is more precise: Lagos courts convicted him in two kidnapping prosecutions in 2022, while other cases involving allegations of murder, attempted murder and kidnapping continued separately.

The Donatus Dunu kidnapping case

In the first of the 2022 judgments, prosecutors accused Onwuamadike and co-defendants of kidnapping businessman Donatus Dunu in Lagos in February 2017 and holding him for ransom. After a multi-year trial, Justice Hakeem Oshodi of the Lagos High Court found Onwuamadike, Uche Amadi and Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu guilty of conspiracy and kidnapping.

On February 25, 2022, the court sentenced each of the three men to life imprisonment. Three other co-defendants were acquitted because the court found the evidence insufficient to connect them to the offences. That acquittal distinction is important: this page does not describe those men as convicted members of the kidnapping.

A second kidnapping conviction

On September 19, 2022, a separate Lagos court convicted Onwuamadike and former soldier Victor Aduba in another kidnapping prosecution involving businessman Sylvanus Ahanonu. The court imposed concurrent terms, the longest being 21 years’ imprisonment.

The second judgment was legally distinct from the life-sentence case. Crime by Region therefore records both outcomes without collapsing the prosecutions into one invented count or implying that the later 21-year sentence replaced the life sentence.

Confession allegations and the court findings

During the litigation, Onwuamadike argued that police had coerced incriminating statements. In the life-sentence case, the trial court rejected the torture claim in the material before it and relied on the prosecution evidence to convict. In the second case, the court also relied on witness identification and recorded statements when finding the prosecution had proved the kidnapping charge.

This page reports those conclusions as findings of the trial courts. It does not independently assert that every statement attributed to Onwuamadike outside court was voluntary or accurate.

Other cases were still separate

By 2025, Onwuamadike continued to face other Lagos proceedings. He sought plea-bargain arrangements in cases involving kidnapping and attempted murder, and in October 2025 he and Joseph Emeka were re-arraigned on charges that included the alleged 2013 murders of police officers Peter Nweke and Chijioke Ngozi. Both defendants pleaded not guilty.

Those later charges are not used to label Onwuamadike a convicted murderer in this dossier. The convictions documented here are the kidnapping-related judgments already reached in 2022.

Current status

Solved / adjudicated for the kidnapping convictions covered here. The life sentence and the separate 21-year kidnapping sentence were both imposed in 2022. As of the sources reviewed through September 2, 2026, later allegations in other files were not treated as replacing or erasing those convictions.
