A family found inside a sealed room

On August 23, 2023, relatives and neighbors discovered five members of one household unresponsive at a home in Cam An Nam commune, Cam Lâm District. Four female family members — the mother and three daughters — had died. Hồ Xuân Hải, the husband and father, was still alive and was taken for medical treatment.

Police said the four victims died from carbon-monoxide poisoning. Investigators recovered a gas cylinder and plastic tubing at the scene. Vietnamese reporting based on police statements said Hải later admitted that he had bought the cylinder, researched carbon monoxide online and released the gas into the room while his wife and daughters were sleeping.

The victims' names were not consistently published in full by the strongest sources reviewed for this page. The public record consistently describes a 49-year-old wife and three daughters, with the oldest in her early twenties and the youngest around ten or eleven.

The financial crisis described by investigators

According to the indictment account reported by VnExpress, Tuổi Trẻ and Pháp Luật TP.HCM, the family had invested in a pig farm and accumulated debts after the venture failed. Prosecutors said Hải decided to kill himself and the rest of the family, searched for a method and obtained a 40-liter carbon-monoxide cylinder on August 22.

The next morning, authorities said, he released the gas into the air-conditioned room where his wife and daughters were sleeping and remained inside. Relatives discovered the family around midday. Hải survived after emergency treatment; the four women did not.

That explanation comes from the prosecution and the factual findings reported from the later trial. The debt itself is context, not justification. The victims' deaths are the central fact of the case, and the page avoids treating a financial crisis as though it made the violence inevitable or understandable.

Investigation and murder charge

Police initially detained Hải after he recovered enough to be questioned. On August 25, 2023, the Khánh Hòa provincial investigation agency formally opened a murder case and charged him under Vietnam's homicide law. Reporting from Tuổi Trẻ stated that the decision was approved by the provincial procuracy.

The physical evidence described publicly included the carbon-monoxide cylinder and tubing, while police also relied on Hải's statements about purchasing the gas and researching its use. The cause of death reported for the four victims was carbon-monoxide poisoning.

The May 2024 trial

On May 9, 2024, the Khánh Hòa Provincial People's Court convicted Hồ Xuân Hải of murder. VnExpress, Tuổi Trẻ and Pháp Luật TP.HCM all reported that the court imposed a death sentence.

Trial reporting said the court considered mitigating factors, including cooperation and partial compensation, but found the conduct exceptionally serious because four lives were deliberately taken. The court also recorded a continuing compensation obligation to the victims' legal representatives.

The reviewed reporting is consistent on the core outcome: a murder conviction at trial and a death sentence. It is less complete about what happened after that judgment.
