The 2015 Bình Phước Massacre

The killings

On July 7, 2015, six members of one extended family were found dead at a residence connected to a wood-processing business in Chơn Thành District, Bình Phước Province. A very young child in the household survived.

Investigators concluded that the crime combined a personal revenge motive attributed to Nguyễn Hải Dương with robbery. This archive avoids reconstructing the attack in graphic detail.

Investigation and arrests

Police identified Nguyễn Hải Dương as the organizer of the crime and Vũ Văn Tiến as the man who accompanied him during the killings. A third defendant, Trần Đình Thoại, was accused of helping with preparations but not of being physically present during the murders themselves.

The distinction among those roles was preserved in court. Dương and Tiến were prosecuted as the direct perpetrators of the six killings and robbery; Thoại faced criminal responsibility as an accomplice for preparatory assistance and failure to stop or report the plan.

Trial

On December 17, 2015, the Bình Phước provincial court convicted Nguyễn Hải Dương and Vũ Văn Tiến of murder and robbery and imposed death sentences. Trần Đình Thoại received a combined term of 16 years in prison.

The court also ordered compensation to the victims' family. Contemporary reporting described intense public attention, but the page does not rely on public reaction as evidence of guilt; the relevant basis is the criminal judgment.

Appeals

In July 2016, the appellate court rejected challenges to the principal verdicts. Vũ Văn Tiến's death sentence was upheld, and Trần Đình Thoại's 16-year prison term remained in place. Reporting from the appeal also noted that requests from the victims' family to expand criminal responsibility to another relative were rejected.

Executions and final status

Nguyễn Hải Dương was executed in November 2017 after his death sentence became final. Vũ Văn Tiến's clemency request was later rejected, and his sentence was carried out on September 20, 2018.

The case is therefore classified as Solved / Adjudicated. The principal defendants were convicted, their appellate proceedings concluded, and the two death sentences were carried out. Trần Đình Thoại's separate 16-year sentence reflects his different adjudicated role.
