The 2020 Bohumín Arson Attack

On the evening of August 8, 2020, a fire raced through an apartment on Nerudova Street in Bohumín, near the Czech-Polish border. Eleven people died. Police quickly concluded that the blaze had been deliberately set, and the investigation focused on a family dispute rather than an accidental building fire.

The apartment and the gathering

Fifteen people were gathered in the apartment when the fire was started. Contemporary emergency reporting described a birthday gathering involving relatives and children. Six people died inside the burning apartment, including three children. Five others died after jumping from a window while trying to escape. Four people survived by reaching a neighboring balcony.

The casualty reporting developed during the first hours of the emergency, but the final death toll consistently settled at eleven. Crime by Region does not reproduce graphic descriptions of the victims' deaths or images from the scene.

The suspect was detained immediately

Police detained a man at the building shortly after the fire. He was later publicly identified in Czech reporting as Zdeněk Konopka. Investigators said he had obtained gasoline before going to the apartment and deliberately ignited the entrance area. The fire spread with extraordinary speed, effectively cutting off the normal exit route.

Authorities initially spoke in cautious terms while fire investigators were still working. Within days, however, police charged the detained man with murder and general endangerment. The allegation was no longer simply that a suspicious fire had occurred; prosecutors said the deaths resulted from a planned act using a flammable liquid.

A family dispute as the prosecution motive

Prosecutors described the motive as a long-running family conflict. Reporting from the later court proceedings stated that Konopka had been unable to accept that his wife had left him and moved into the apartment where their son lived with his partner and child. His wife, son and grandson were among those killed.

Motive is included here only as described by police and prosecutors. The existence of a family breakdown does not explain away the criminal responsibility established in court, and this page does not add psychological diagnoses that were not part of the reliable judicial record reviewed.

The guilty plea agreement

The criminal case did not proceed through a long contested trial. Konopka reached an agreement with the state prosecutor in which he admitted guilt and accepted life imprisonment. On November 30, 2021, the Regional Court in Ostrava approved the agreement.

Czech Television, citing the Czech News Agency, reported that the decision was final: neither the defendant nor the prosecutor had a right to appeal the approved agreement. The court also addressed compensation claims from injured parties, while directing additional claims to civil proceedings.

Why the legal wording matters

Early international reports often described the event as a suspected arson because they were published before investigators completed the first phase of their work. Later Czech reporting and the final court disposition establish a different evidentiary position: the fire was an intentional criminal act, Konopka admitted responsibility, and a court imposed life imprisonment.

This dossier therefore uses Solved / Adjudicated. It does not preserve the uncertainty of the first breaking-news headlines after that uncertainty was resolved by the investigation and final judgment.
