The Murder of Beatriz Lebre

Beatriz Lebre was a 23-year-old psychology graduate from Elvas studying for a master's degree in Lisbon. Her family reported her missing after losing contact with her in May 2020. Investigators quickly treated the disappearance as suspicious.

The investigation

The Polícia Judiciária announced the detention of a 25-year-old man after investigators found strong indications of homicide. Contemporary reporting identified him as Rúben Couto, a fellow student of Beatriz.

Police sources told Portuguese media that Couto confessed to killing Beatriz and provided information about what had happened after her death. Those statements are significant investigative evidence, but they were never tested in a criminal trial because Couto died before proceedings reached that stage.

Recovery of Beatriz

On May 29, 2020, authorities recovered the body of a young woman from the Tagus River near Santa Apolónia in Lisbon. Subsequent reporting identified the victim as Beatriz. The recovery transformed what had begun as a missing-person inquiry into a homicide case with a known victim and a detained suspect.

Pretrial detention

After appearing before an investigating judge, Couto was placed in preventive detention, the most restrictive pretrial measure available under Portuguese law. Preventive detention is not a conviction: it reflects the judicial assessment of risk and the seriousness of the allegations while an investigation continues.

The suspect dies before trial

On July 5, 2020, Couto was found dead in his cell at Lisbon Prison. He had been awaiting trial. His death meant there would be no criminal verdict determining guilt, no adversarial testing of the reported confession and no sentencing proceeding.

That procedural fact is central to the current status. Media frequently described Couto as the confessed killer, but this archive does not convert a confession reported by police into a conviction that the courts never entered.

What the case establishes

Beatriz was murdered. Police detained Couto on strong suspicion and multiple reliable outlets reported that he confessed. He then died in custody before trial. No other person was convicted of Beatriz's murder.
