The attack
People had gathered outside Ankara's main railway station for the “Labour, Peace and Democracy” rally when the attack occurred on 10 October 2015. Anadolu Agency's later retrospective, drawing on the judicial record, states that 101 civilians died and 379 people were injured.
Public memorial sources have not always used exactly the same death toll in the years since the attack. Crime by Region therefore follows the 101-victim count used in the 2024 court proceedings and the 2025 Anadolu Agency retrospective, rather than combining different historical tallies into a single unsupported figure.
The first major trial
In 2018, nine defendants were convicted in the main Ankara case and received multiple aggravated-life sentences for the killings and related offences. The criminal proceedings did not end there. Appeals and constitutional litigation later required parts of the case to be heard again.
The fact that a defendant was tried in the broader case does not mean every alleged role was proved. Some charges changed on review, and a separate file continued for suspects who remained outside the court's reach.
The 2024 retrial
After appellate rulings required a retrial, the Ankara 4th High Criminal Court announced a new judgment on 1 July 2024. Ten detained defendants were before the court as part of a broader file involving 26 accused persons.
Reuters reported that the ten were again convicted in the retrial and received multiple life sentences. Anadolu Agency's detailed account records that Erman Ekici received aggravated life imprisonment for the constitutional-order offence, 101 aggravated-life sentences for the 101 killings, and additional prison terms for 379 attempted-murder counts and other offences. Nine other defendants received aggravated-life sentences for the killing of Mustafa Budak within the terrorist-organization case.
The court separated the proceedings concerning defendants who remained subject to arrest warrants. Anadolu Agency's reporting on the retrial states that the case had been combined with a file concerning **16 fugitive defendants**. Their unresolved status is why Crime by Region does not label the wider accountability picture completely finished.
What the judgment did — and did not — establish
The 2024 judgment produced substantial criminal accountability. It did not, however, turn every person ever named in investigative reporting into a convicted participant, nor did it resolve every allegation about possible security failures by public officials. Lawyers for victims continued to argue that the investigation should have gone further; Reuters reported those criticisms after the verdict.
Those institutional allegations are kept separate from the criminal convictions. A claim that an authority failed to prevent an attack is legally different from proof that a specific official participated in the attack itself.
Current verified status
As of 27 August 2026, the latest merits judgment located for the main retrial is the 1 July 2024 Ankara court decision. A 2025 Anadolu Agency retrospective continues to describe the attack as the deadliest terrorist attack against civilians in modern Turkish history and uses the same 101-death and 379-injury figures.
Because ten defendants were convicted again while proceedings involving fugitives remained unresolved, the editorial status is Partially Adjudicated. Crime by Region does not claim a later appellate outcome that was not located in the sources reviewed for this page.
