The attack and discovery
In the early hours of February 2, 2013, Anene Booysen was in Bredasdorp after spending time at a local pub. She was later found alive but critically injured at a housing construction site. She was transported for medical care and died later that day at Tygerberg Hospital.
The case quickly became a national symbol of concern over violence against women and girls in South Africa. Public attention was intense, but the criminal case still required the court to separate public outrage from evidence capable of proving the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.
The investigation
Johannes Kana and another man were initially arrested. Charges against the second man were later withdrawn for insufficient evidence. Kana remained before the court on rape and murder charges.
Kana admitted that he had left the pub with Booysen and acknowledged assaulting and raping her, but he denied causing her death. The prosecution rejected an earlier limited guilty plea because it did not correspond with the State's version of the evidence and proceeded to trial on both charges.
The trial
Judge Patricia Goliath found Kana guilty of rape and murder on October 29, 2013. The judgment evaluated witness testimony, Kana's own admissions, medical evidence and the broader circumstantial case.
