Abdelaâli Hadi and the Taroudant Serial Murders

The discovery near Oued Waer

On August 20, 2004, human remains were found near Taroudant, close to Oued Waer. Moroccan reporting described eight sets of remains in advanced decomposition or skeletal condition. Forensic work established that the deaths were criminal in origin and that the victims were young.

Contemporary reporting from Aujourd'hui le Maroc said two victims were 11 years old, five were between 13 and 14, and the oldest was 15. Later reporting sometimes used slightly broader age ranges. This page uses the ages reported close to the investigation rather than attempting to manufacture a single precision where historical summaries differ.

Investigators identify Abdelaâli Hadi

The investigation led authorities to Abdelaâli Hadi, a man born in Taroudant in 1962 who worked around the city's bus station. He was arrested in early September 2004. Contemporary Moroccan sources place the arrest on September 7.

After his arrest, Hadi admitted responsibility for the eight deaths under investigation and disclosed a ninth killing. That additional admission expanded the documented victim count to nine.

A ninth victim

The ninth case mattered because it was not simply a media estimate added to the original discovery. Moroccan coverage at the time reported that Hadi gave investigators an account of an earlier killing and indicated where the victim had initially been buried. The authorities therefore treated the ninth death as part of the same serial-murder investigation.

The archive does not reproduce sensational details from his statements. The material necessary to understand the case is that he admitted the killings, the investigation recovered physical evidence related to the eight discovered victims, and prosecutors brought the matter before the Agadir appellate court's criminal chamber.

Trial and conviction

Hadi was prosecuted on charges that Moroccan reporting described as including premeditated homicide, kidnapping or unlawful confinement of minors, torture or violence, and sexual offences against minors. He admitted the killings during the proceedings.

In December 2004, the criminal chamber of the Agadir Court of Appeal convicted Hadi and sentenced him to death. Historical sources disagree on the exact December date: Aujourd'hui le Maroc places the sentencing hearing on December 2, while a later MAP report carried by Le Matin gives December 20. Because both sources agree on the court, month, conviction and death sentence, this archive records the outcome without pretending the day is settled.

Other defendants

Three other people were prosecuted in connection with conduct surrounding the crimes. Contemporary court reporting said they received prison terms ranging from one to four years for offences such as failing to report crimes and related conduct. The record does not support describing those defendants as co-killers of all nine victims, and this page does not do so.

The victims are finally buried

In April 2009, MAP reported that the remains of the eight victims recovered in 2004 were buried in Taroudant after years of forensic and judicial retention. Families, local authorities and child-protection advocates attended the funeral proceedings.

The delayed burial underscores why the case is treated here as a victim-centered historical file rather than as a profile of Hadi. The central facts are nine lost young lives, a lengthy identification and judicial process, and a conviction that remained consequential long after the trial.

Hadi's death in custody

Moroccan outlet LeSiteinfo reported in May 2022 that Abdelaâli Hadi had died at Moul El Berki central prison in Safi. That report confirms he died in custody years after his conviction. Some later summaries describe the practical effect of his unexecuted capital sentence differently, but there is no basis to rewrite the original 2004 court reporting: the contemporaneous record documents a death sentence.
