RCMP constables Peter Schiemann, Anthony Gordon, Leo Johnston and Brock Myrol were murdered near Mayerthorpe in 2005. Gunman James Roszko died at the scene; two men who assisted him later pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Douglas Garland was convicted of three first-degree murders; the convictions survived appeal, while the law authorizing his stacked parole-ineligibility period was later struck down retroactively.
