State of Palestine True Crime

This source-led archive begins with the 2022 killing of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in Jenin. It separates what monitoring bodies found from what governments stated, and it does not convert a probable source of fire into an unproved finding about an individual’s criminal intent.

Solved / adjudicated cases

A case appears here only when reliable records establish individual criminal responsibility through a credible final process.

No State of Palestine case currently meets this archive’s solved standard. A monitoring conclusion, an internal review or a reported investigation is not treated as a conviction.

Unsolved cases

Documented cases without a final judgment establishing individual criminal responsibility.

How this archive classifies the case

The page distinguishes source attribution, evidentiary conclusions and criminal adjudication.

Findings stay attributed

OHCHR, the United States, the Palestinian Authority and the IDF used different methods and language. Their conclusions are identified separately.

Probability is not a verdict

A finding that fire likely came from a position or force does not by itself prove an individual shooter’s identity, intent or criminal liability.

Victim-aware presentation

The imagery is symbolic and non-documentary. It does not recreate the shooting, invent evidence or depict a suspect.

Why this file meets the standard

The record supports a substantive account with primary statements from institutions that reached different conclusions.

The case file draws on the UN Human Rights Office’s monitoring, the Israeli military’s published review, the United States Security Coordinator’s assessment, established reporting and the Committee to Protect Journalists’ 2026 accountability update. It explains where those sources agree, where they differ and what remains unproved.

Future additions must have a distinct search purpose, a defensible connection to the State of Palestine, multiple reliable sources and a clearly stated procedural status. Page volume is never treated as a measure of crime or safety.

State of Palestine archive FAQ

Direct answers on scope, evidence and current status.

Is the State of Palestine part of the archive’s 195-country target?

Yes. This project follows the canonical set of 193 UN member states plus the Holy See and the State of Palestine. It does not count territories or dependencies toward the target.

What happened to Shireen Abu Akleh?

The Palestinian-American Al Jazeera journalist was shot and killed on 11 May 2022 while reporting on an Israeli military operation in Jenin in the occupied West Bank. Journalist Ali al-Samoudi was also wounded.

Why is the case classified as unsolved?

No individual has been convicted or publicly charged for the fatal shooting. Official and independent reviews reached important findings about the likely source of fire, but accountability and the question of criminal responsibility remain unresolved.

What did the UN Human Rights Office conclude?

After reviewing available material and visiting the scene, the Office said the shots that killed Abu Akleh and wounded Ali al-Samoudi came from Israeli Security Forces, and that it found no armed Palestinian activity in the journalists’ immediate vicinity.

What did the Israeli military conclude?

The IDF said there was a high possibility that Abu Akleh was accidentally hit by IDF gunfire aimed at suspects during an exchange of fire, while stating that it could not determine the source unequivocally and found no suspicion of a criminal offence.

What is the latest verified accountability status?

In May 2026, the Committee to Protect Journalists reported that the publicly reported FBI investigation appeared stalled and that no demonstrable progress toward accountability had been disclosed.
