Nicaragua true crime: documented cases and unresolved investigations

Direct answer: Nicaragua’s archive now contains two documented journalist killings. Ángel Gahona’s 2018 death remains unresolved after disputed convictions and an IACHR finding. Pedro Joaquín Chamorro’s 1978 assassination produced nine convictions, but the person or institution that ordered the murder was never established by a final judgment in the reviewed record.

Solved cases

Cases with verified convictions that reliably establish the responsible perpetrator.

No case in this archive currently meets the site’s solved standard. A domestic conviction alone is not treated as conclusive when later authoritative findings say the true perpetrator was not identified.

Unsolved cases

Documented deaths for which individual criminal responsibility remains unresolved.

How this archive handles evidence

A verdict, an amnesty and an international human-rights finding answer different questions.

The Gahona file records that Brandon Lovo and Glen Slate were convicted in 2018; it also records the family’s objections, fair-trial criticism and the IACHR’s later merits finding that the evidence pointed to a state agent.

The page does not erase the domestic judgments, but it does not present the two men as factually established perpetrators after the IACHR concluded that Nicaragua failed to identify and punish those responsible. The pending Inter-American case concerns state responsibility and remedies; it is not itself a criminal trial of a named shooter.

Further Nicaragua cases will be added only when court records, official investigations, institutional findings or established journalism support a substantive and respectful account.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers about the archive and its classifications.

How many Nicaragua cases are published?

Two: the unresolved 2018 killing of journalist Ángel Eduardo Gahona López in Bluefields.

Why is the Gahona case unsolved if two men were convicted?

The convictions are part of the record, but the IACHR later found that evidence pointed to a state agent and that the true perpetrators had not been identified and punished. The two men were released under a 2019 amnesty.

Did the IACHR identify the shooter?

No named shooter was identified in the reviewed public finding. The Commission found that the evidence pointed to a state agent and held Nicaragua internationally responsible for violations, including failures of investigation and judicial protection.

Will more Nicaragua cases be added?

Yes, when reliable sources can support a complete case page and an accurate legal-status classification.
