The disappearance and discovery

Zainab Ansari disappeared in Kasur, Punjab, on January 4, 2018. According to contemporary reporting by Dawn, her body was recovered five days later, on January 9. The killing generated nationwide outrage and placed renewed scrutiny on a pattern of violence against children reported in the Kasur area.

The Punjab government announced the arrest of local resident Imran Ali on January 23. Investigators linked him to Zainab's case through a combination of evidence that would later be described in appellate proceedings, including CCTV material, photographs, DNA testing and medical evidence.

Investigation and evidence

Ali was prosecuted before an anti-terrorism court in Lahore. The case moved quickly, but the court still heard prosecution evidence before judgment. Later Supreme Court reporting emphasized that the prosecution record did not depend on a confession alone: the court pointed to CCTV footage, photographs, DNA tests and medical evidence as corroborating material.

The conviction was not the end of the legal process. Ali challenged the result before the Lahore High Court, arguing that the trial had been conducted too quickly and seeking to overturn the judgment.

High Court and Supreme Court review

On March 21, 2018, Dawn reported that the Lahore High Court dismissed Ali's appeal and upheld the trial court's conviction. The prosecution pointed to the confession, DNA analysis and witness evidence in support of the verdict.

Ali then appealed to the Supreme Court of Pakistan. On June 12, 2018, a three-judge bench rejected that appeal. Clemency and final legal status

After the judicial appeals were exhausted, Ali sought clemency. President Arif Alvi rejected the mercy petition on October 10, 2018. An anti-terrorism court then issued a warrant directing that the sentence be carried out on October 17 at Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Central Jail.
