The case
Yuyun, a 14-year-old junior-high-school student, disappeared on April 2, 2016 in Rejang Lebong, Bengkulu. Police later investigated a group attack involving numerous alleged perpetrators. Public anger grew rapidly as the case exposed both the vulnerability of a child victim and the complexity of prosecuting defendants of different ages.
Contemporary police and court reporting described 14 alleged participants. The proceedings were split because several defendants were minors. This page follows those separate legal tracks rather than collapsing every defendant into one identical role or sentence.
Juvenile proceedings
On May 10, 2016, seven juvenile defendants were convicted in the Curup court. ANTARA reported that each received a 10-year prison sentence plus six months of work training under the applicable child-protection framework.
A younger child defendant was handled separately and received a social-rehabilitation measure rather than the adult penalties imposed later in the case.
Adult defendants
The adult case concluded at first instance on September 29, 2016. Zainal, identified in the judgment as the person who organized and directed the crime, received a death sentence. Four other adult defendants each received 20 years in prison.
Zainal appealed. By July 2019, ANTARA reported that both the Bengkulu High Court and the Supreme Court had rejected his appellate challenges and upheld the original death sentence. The same report said the sentence had legal force while further clemency options remained a separate matter. This page does not claim that the death sentence was later carried out.
Why the status remains partial
The source record reviewed for this publication states that 13 alleged participants had been brought before the courts while one alleged participant remained at large. I did not locate a later reliable adjudication that closed that final accountability gap. For that reason, this archive classifies the case as partially adjudicated rather than pretending every alleged participant was convicted.
Timeline
April 2, 2016: Yuyun disappears in Rejang Lebong.
May 10, 2016: seven juvenile defendants receive 10-year sentences and work-training orders.
September 29, 2016: Zainal is sentenced to death; four adult co-defendants receive 20-year prison terms.
October 2016: Zainal files an appeal.
July 2019: ANTARA reports that the High Court and Supreme Court had rejected his appeals and left the death sentence intact.
Current status
The central prosecutions produced substantial convictions and final appellate review for the principal adult defendant. The case nevertheless remains in the partial category because the published record reviewed here did not establish a completed prosecution of every alleged participant. Allegations are not treated as convictions.
