What happened
Wadeema and her younger sister Meera were living with their father, Hamad Al Shirawi, and his partner, Al Onoud Al Ameri, in Dubai. Prosecutors said the girls were repeatedly abused and confined. Wadeema died in 2012; her body was later recovered from Al Badayer in Sharjah. Meera survived and was reported by the courts to have sustained a permanent disability.
The case drew exceptional public attention in the UAE because it involved violence inside a household where the adult responsible for custody was also one of the defendants. Contemporary court reporting documented competing defence claims, but the final judgments found both adults criminally responsible.
Trial and sentencing
Dubai Criminal Court initially sentenced Al Shirawi to death and Al Ameri to life imprisonment. The court convicted them over the abuse of both girls and Wadeema's death. The initial capital sentence was not the final outcome.
In June 2013, the Dubai Court of Appeal commuted Al Shirawi's death sentence to life imprisonment after the appellate panel did not reach the unanimity required to preserve the death penalty. Al Ameri's life sentence was upheld.
Final appeal
On October 28, 2013, the Dubai Court of Cassation upheld the life sentences. Contemporary reporting described that ruling as final because the ordinary appeal process had been exhausted. This page therefore classifies the case as Solved / Adjudicated.
The final disposition matters because later summaries sometimes repeat the first-instance death sentence without explaining that it was reduced on appeal. Crime by Region uses the last verified appellate result rather than the earliest headline.
Wadeema's Law
The case became closely associated with a broader child-protection debate in the UAE. Federal Law No. 3 of 2016 concerning child rights is officially known as Wadeema's Law. The UAE Government states that the law protects children from neglect, exploitation, physical abuse and psychological abuse, and gives child-protection specialists powers to intervene when a child faces imminent danger.
The law should not be described as part of the criminal sentence in this case; it was a later federal legislative response in the child-rights sphere. Its official title and provisions are documented by the UAE Government and the federal legislation platform.

The murder of Wadeema is Solved / Adjudicated. Hamad Al Shirawi and Al Onoud Al Ameri received final life sentences. Wadeema's younger sister survived, and the case remains a significant reference point in the UAE's child-protection history.
