On 11 June 2020, a 22-year-old former pupil forced his way into the United School in Vrútky and attacked staff and children with a knife. Deputy principal Jaroslav Budz was killed and four people inside the school were injured. Classification boundary: “resolved offender” means police identified the attacker and reconstructed the event. It does not imply a criminal conviction: he died during the police response. The archive separately records that the police use of firearms was investigated and found lawful.

The school and the morning attack

The attack took place at the United School on M. R. Štefánika Street in Vrútky, a town in northern Slovakia. According to the police account reported by Slovakia’s public broadcaster and international media, the former pupil broke through a glass entrance door while carrying a knife.

School staff tried to prevent him from moving farther into the building. Deputy principal Jaroslav Budz confronted him at the entrance and received fatal injuries. His action was later honored publicly as an effort to protect pupils and colleagues.

The people attacked

After attacking Budz, the assailant injured the school caretaker. He then entered farther into the building and seriously injured a female teacher and two pupils. Contemporary reports therefore describe four people injured by the attacker in addition to Budz’s death.

Some broader casualty summaries give a higher injury figure because two police officers were hurt by ricocheting bullet fragments during the later confrontation. The archive keeps those categories distinct: four people were attacked inside the school, while two officers sustained injuries during the police response.

Pursuit and police response

The attacker fled the school, with the injured caretaker reportedly following him. Responding officers located him nearby. Police stated that he advanced or attempted to defend himself with the knife, after which officers fired their weapons and killed him.

The attacker’s death made an ordinary prosecution impossible. Slovak reporting in February 2021 said the criminal proceeding against him was stopped because a deceased person cannot be prosecuted. That legal ending did not erase the investigation of the event or the separate review of police conduct.

Independent review of the officers’ actions

Slovakia’s Office of the Inspection Service examined whether the responding officers’ use of force complied with law. In March 2021, the Interior Ministry announced that the investigation had been completed and that the officers had acted within the law.

This finding resolves the legal review of the police shooting in the sources examined. It should not be expanded into a claim that every operational question was uncontested; contemporary commentary debated training and tactics, but no unlawful use of force was established by the inspection.

What remains unknown

Early reporting and later retrospectives discussed the attacker’s history, including claims about bullying and earlier threatening conduct. These accounts are relevant background but do not amount to a formally established motive. The archive therefore does not state that revenge, mental illness or any other theory was proven.

No trial occurred in which motive evidence could be tested. The most accurate endpoint is that the offender was identified, the attack sequence was reconstructed, the police response was found lawful, and motive remained unknown.

Memory and school safety

The killing shocked Slovakia, where attacks of this type in schools had been rare. National leaders expressed condolences, and Vrútky honored Budz posthumously. President Zuzana Čaputová later awarded him the Milan Rastislav Štefánik Cross, First Class, for risking his life to save others.

The case also became part of a broader Slovak discussion about school security and the protection of so-called soft targets. Those policy debates are consequential, but they do not change the specific evidence or legal findings in this case.
