The 2025 Villach Attack

The attack

On February 15, 2025, a man attacked people in the centre of Villach in the Austrian state of Carinthia. A 14-year-old boy was killed and five other people, including young men and teenagers, were seriously injured.

A passing delivery driver intervened and helped stop the attack. Police arrested the suspect at the scene. Contemporary reporting said the victims did not have a prior relationship with the attacker.

Investigation

Austrian authorities treated the case as an Islamist terrorist attack. Investigators said the suspect had radicalized online and had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State organization shortly before the crime. The prosecution later alleged that he acted with the intention of intimidating civilians who did not follow the extremist group's ideology.

Charges and trial

The defendant was charged with murder, five attempted murders and terrorist offences. His jury trial took place at the Klagenfurt Regional Court in May 2026 under enhanced security measures.

On May 27, 2026, the jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts. The court convicted him of murder, attempted murder, terrorist offences, participation in a terrorist association and participation in a criminal organization. He received a sentence of life imprisonment.

When the judgment became final

The judgment was initially announced as not yet final because the prosecution still had a formal period in which it could seek review. The defendant waived his own appeal immediately after sentencing.

On June 2, 2026, Austrian authorities confirmed that the prosecution had allowed its deadline to expire without filing a challenge. The life sentence therefore became final.

Current status

The case is Solved / Adjudicated. The surviving attacker was convicted on all principal counts and is serving a final life sentence. The court's judgment legally established both the homicide and attempted homicides and the terrorist character of the offences.
