The attack
Shortly after 9 a.m. on December 27, 1985, three attackers entered the departure hall at Vienna-Schwechat Airport and attacked a group of passengers near the El Al counter. Austria's Interior Ministry historical account records four deaths in total, including one attacker, meaning three victims were killed. It records 45 people wounded, 18 of them seriously.
Contemporary international reporting sometimes counted four people killed at the airport without immediately separating the dead attacker from the civilian toll. This archive follows the later Austrian Interior Ministry breakdown and makes that distinction explicit.
Police response and arrests
One attacker was killed during the response. The other two were wounded and captured after a pursuit. Austrian authorities linked the attackers to the Abu Nidal Organization, which had previously been connected to other violent attacks in Austria.

The 1987 trial
The two surviving attackers were prosecuted in Austria. On May 21, 1987, an Austrian jury sentenced both men to life imprisonment. Contemporary court reporting identified them as Ahmed Ben Chaoval and Ben Abdalloh Saadqoui. Neither appealed the life sentences at the time of judgment.
The convictions established criminal responsibility for the surviving direct participants. The broader historical attribution to the Abu Nidal Organization is reported as the conclusion of Austrian authorities and contemporary investigative reporting, rather than as a substitute for the specific individual convictions.
Later custody
The Austrian Interior Ministry's historical account notes that one of the convicted men later received an additional sentence after involvement in a 1996 prison hostage incident, while the other was released in 2008. Those later sentence-administration developments did not erase the 1987 life-sentence convictions for the airport attack.
