The disappearance and arrest
Victory Chikamso Nmezuwuba disappeared from the Eliozu area of Port Harcourt on August 18, 2017. Police reporting carried by Nigerian media said local vigilantes became suspicious of Ifeanyi Maxwell Dike's movements and detained him before he was handed over to police.
The evidence recovered at the time led investigators to treat the case as a homicide. Contemporary reports used sensational language about the condition of Victory's body; this dossier does not reproduce those details because they are not necessary to understand the prosecution.
An escape from custody
Shortly after his detention, Dike escaped from police custody. Nigerian reporting documented a search that ended with his recapture in Plateau State and his return to Port Harcourt for prosecution.
A police officer, Johnbosco Okoronze, was separately accused of aiding the escape. By the time the murder case concluded, he had been dismissed from the police and was convicted for aiding the escape, receiving a one-year sentence after the court took account of time already spent in custody.
The prosecution
Dike and Ugochukwu Nwamiro were tried in the Rivers State High Court on charges of conspiracy and murder. Reporting on the judgment said the court relied on the evidentiary record before it, including statements attributed to Dike, while the defense challenged aspects of criminal responsibility.
Dike's counsel did not deny that Dike had killed Victory but argued that he was mentally unwell at the time. The court rejected the insanity argument. Nwamiro contested the case against him, and his lawyer said after judgment that the conviction would be appealed.
The May 2020 judgment
On May 13, 2020, Justice Adolphus Enebeli convicted Dike and Nwamiro of conspiracy and murder and imposed death sentences. The Guardian, THISDAY and Punch all reported the judgment from Port Harcourt.
