The Murder of Vadym Komarov

A journalist known for difficult investigations

Vadym Komarov worked in Cherkasy and reported on subjects that could put a local reporter in conflict with powerful interests: alleged corruption, misuse of public money, controversial construction projects and conditions inside correctional institutions. International press-freedom organizations later stressed that his reporting history made the attack especially alarming, while also cautioning that motive had to be established by investigators rather than assumed.

Komarov had also survived an earlier violent incident. Reporting organizations noted that he had been shot at in 2016, an episode that added to concerns about threats surrounding his work but did not by itself establish who attacked him in 2019.

The May 4 attack

On the morning of May 4, 2019, passersby found Komarov unconscious in central Cherkasy with severe head injuries. Police initially opened a case over serious bodily harm and then reclassified the investigation as attempted murder. His money and phone were reported to have remained with him, a circumstance investigators considered while examining possible motives.

Komarov underwent surgery and remained in a medically induced coma. He never regained consciousness. On June 20, 2019, he died from the injuries sustained in the attack, and the criminal investigation was reclassified as premeditated murder.

What investigators examined

Police publicly discussed several working versions of the crime, including a possible connection to Komarov's professional activity, a sudden conflict with an unidentified person and a financially motivated attack. Later investigators said the professional-activity theory had become a major focus and that they reviewed his publications and interviewed people connected to subjects he had covered.

Those investigative directions are not equivalent to proof. No public court record has established that a person criticized in Komarov's reporting ordered or committed the murder. This page therefore does not name local officials, prison figures or other people discussed in investigative leads as perpetrators.

A large investigation without a suspect

By 2021, prosecutors and police said they had conducted more than 1,700 interviews, examined hundreds of investigative leads, reviewed camera material and analyzed extensive communications data. An identikit of a possible attacker was produced, yet authorities still had not identified either the perpetrator or any organizer.

In November 2021, a senior National Police official said there were still no suspects. The investigation had by then included 1,693 witness interviews, searches, scene examinations and forensic work. The public record remained one of substantial investigative activity without a person formally accused of the killing.

The six-year update

A July 2, 2025 update from Ukraine's National Union of Journalists, citing a response from the Main Investigation Department of the National Police in Cherkasy Region, reported that six years of investigation had still not identified the person or persons who committed or participated in the crime. According to that police response, nobody had been formally suspected, detained or held in custody in connection with the murder.

That is the latest reliable public status located for this dossier. It means the case remains a genuine unresolved murder rather than a case where a suspect simply awaits trial.

Current status

The murder of Vadym Komarov remains Unsolved. The attack and the victim's death are well documented, and authorities have treated the case as intentional homicide. But the available public record does not establish who carried out the assault, whether another person ordered it, or which investigative motive is correct.
