The Murder of Tova Moberg
Nineteen-year-old Tova Moberg disappeared after spending an evening at her former boyfriend's rural property in Hälsingland. Her death led to a murder conviction, an appellate review and a final life sentence.
Disappearance and discovery
Tova Moberg was 19 and lived in the Njutånger area of Hälsingland. In May 2017 she was reported missing after an evening at a rural property outside Hudiksvall where her former boyfriend lived.
Police searched the area and her body was later found in a nearby lake. The former boyfriend became the central suspect. He denied killing Tova during the investigation and through the first two court proceedings.
District Court judgment
In February 2018, Hudiksvall District Court convicted the then 23-year-old former boyfriend of Tova's murder and imposed life imprisonment. The court also convicted him of several other offences arising from his treatment of Tova before her death, including assault, unlawful coercion and threats.
The prosecution's case included evidence about the relationship, events surrounding Tova's final night and the location where the courts found that the killing occurred. This page does not reproduce unnecessary forensic detail.
Appeal
The defendant appealed and sought an acquittal. On May 17, 2018, the Court of Appeal for Lower Norrland upheld the murder conviction and the life sentence, finding it proved beyond reasonable doubt that he intentionally killed Tova during the night of May 14, 2017.
The appellate court did change parts of the lower-court judgment: it acquitted him of one assault count and five threat counts that it considered insufficiently proved. Those changes are kept separate from the murder conviction, which remained intact.
Supreme Court
The defendant then sought review by Sweden's Supreme Court, again asking first for acquittal and alternatively for a fixed-term sentence rather than life imprisonment.
On June 21, 2018, the Supreme Court declined leave to appeal. That decision left the appellate murder conviction and life sentence standing as the final judgment.
Current status
The case is Solved / Adjudicated. Tova's former boyfriend was convicted of murder at trial, the murder conviction and life sentence were upheld on appeal, and the Supreme Court declined further review.
