What happened
In the early hours of July 13, 1991, Roland John Chapman, Maureen Hultman and Jussi Olavi Leino were shot in Makati. Chapman died from the attack. Hultman initially survived but died months later from her injuries; Leino survived.
The prosecution and trial
Claudio Teehankee Jr. was prosecuted in separate criminal cases arising from the shootings. The death of Hultman changed the case concerning her from frustrated murder to murder while proceedings were underway.
Supreme Court outcome
In 1995, the Supreme Court affirmed Teehankee's criminal responsibility with modifications: homicide for the killing of Chapman, murder for the killing of Hultman, and frustrated murder for the shooting of Leino. The ruling carefully differentiated the legal classification of each offense.
Why the case matters
The case became prominent not only because of the victims and the defendant's family background, but also because it illustrates how appellate courts can reassess the legal characterization of offenses while leaving core findings of guilt intact.
