Stephany Flores Ramírez, a 21-year-old Peruvian business student, was found dead in a Lima hotel room. Surveillance footage and hotel records showed her entering the room with Dutch national Joran van der Sloot, who left Peru shortly afterward.
Van der Sloot was arrested in Chile and returned to Peru. Prosecutors relied on surveillance images, forensic findings, his movements after the killing, and statements he made during questioning. He later admitted killing Flores, although accounts of the precise motive varied.
In 2012, a Peruvian court convicted van der Sloot of murder and sentenced him to 28 years in prison. The case is solved through his admission and conviction.
