The Murder of Sandra Palo

The crime

In the early hours of May 17, 2003, Sandra Palo and a companion were walking near Madrid's M-30 when they encountered the group later convicted in the case. Sandra was unlawfully taken in a vehicle and brought toward an isolated area near Leganés. Her body was found later that day. Contemporary court reporting established that four people participated: one adult and three teenagers who were minors under Spanish law at the time.

Juvenile proceedings

The three minors were tried first in Madrid's juvenile court system. In October 2003, two 17-year-olds received eight years of secure detention followed by five years of supervised release, while the youngest defendant received four years of detention followed by three years of supervision. The Madrid Provincial Court later upheld the challenged juvenile sentences.

Adult prosecution

Francisco Javier Astorga Luque, the only adult defendant, was tried separately before the Madrid Provincial Court. In February 2005 he was convicted of unlawful detention, sexual offences and murder and was sentenced to a combined 64 years in prison. The adult and juvenile cases were legally distinct, but together they established criminal responsibility for all four participants. Spain's Supreme Court later upheld the adult conviction and sentence.

Why the case remained nationally significant

Sandra's family campaigned publicly for changes to Spain's juvenile justice system after the convictions. The case became part of a broader debate about how serious violent offences committed by minors should be punished. Those later policy arguments are separate from the findings of guilt in Sandra's case.

Current status

This case is Solved / Adjudicated. All four participants identified in the criminal proceedings were convicted. Later arrests or alleged offences involving any former defendant do not alter the judgments entered for Sandra's murder and are not treated here as part of the original case.
