What happened
Shortly after 2 a.m. on 6 July 2010, an argument developed between people in two vehicles waiting at a McDonald's drive-through in Porvoo's Näsi area. Three men were shot. Two died at the scene and the third died later in hospital in Helsinki.
The investigation
Police stopped a vehicle on the highway outside Porvoo and recovered an illegal semi-automatic handgun believed to have been used in the shooting. Investigators reconstructed the sequence with surveillance material and other evidence. Within days, Åkerlund watched the footage with his lawyer, identified himself and admitted killing the three men.
The defendant's history
The case attracted particular attention because Åkerlund had previously been convicted of murder and other violent offences. He had been released from prison in December 2009 after serving about twelve years of a life sentence, roughly seven months before the Porvoo killings.
Trial and sentence
In February 2011, a court in Porvoo sentenced Åkerlund to 15 years in prison for the three killings and weapons offences, with no chance of parole under the terms reported by Yle. The defence said the shootings had not been premeditated, and Åkerlund expressed regret. His defence announced that it would not appeal the verdict.
