The Murder of Peter Falconio

The attack near Barrow Creek

Peter Falconio and his partner Joanne Lees were travelling through Australia's Northern Territory when they encountered Bradley John Murdoch on the Stuart Highway near Barrow Creek on July 14, 2001. Falconio was 28.

Lees survived the attack and later became a central witness in the prosecution. Falconio's body was not found, but investigators treated the case as a homicide and continued extensive searches.

Trial and conviction

In December 2005, a Northern Territory jury convicted Murdoch of Falconio's murder, as well as offences against Lees including deprivation of liberty and aggravated assault. He received life imprisonment for the murder with a 28-year non-parole period.

Murdoch challenged the convictions, including arguments concerning identification and other evidence. In January 2007, the Northern Territory Court of Criminal Appeal dismissed his appeal. The High Court of Australia later refused special leave.

The unresolved location of Peter's remains

Although the criminal responsibility for Falconio's murder was adjudicated, one central part of the case remained unresolved: the location of his remains. Murdoch consistently denied responsibility and did not reveal where Peter had been left.

Murdoch died in July 2025. Northern Territory Police said he died without, as far as police knew, disclosing the location of Falconio's remains. Police retained a reward of up to A$500,000 for information leading directly to their discovery.

Twenty-five years later

On the 25th anniversary of the murder in July 2026, Northern Territory Police reaffirmed that the investigation into the location of Peter's remains remained active. Police released additional material and appealed again for information from anyone who might know where he was left.

Current status

This case is Solved / Adjudicated as to the murder conviction. Bradley Murdoch was convicted and his appeal failed. The location of Peter Falconio's remains, however, remains unresolved, and police continue efforts to bring that part of the case to a conclusion.
