The Murder of Pelin Kaya and the 40-Year Sentence

Pelin Kaya, a 30-year-old Turkish interior designer living in Malta, was walking home in Gżira after celebrating her birthday when Jeremie Camilleri drove onto the pavement and struck her. He later admitted wilful homicide and thirteen other offences. A Maltese court sentenced him to 40 years in prison.

Pelin Kaya

Pelin Kaya was born in Istanbul and had moved to Malta, where she worked as an interior designer. Friends and colleagues remembered her for her warmth. On the night of 17–18 January 2023, she had been celebrating her 30th birthday and was walking home through Gżira.

The published court record said Kaya and Camilleri did not know one another. That distinction matters: the conviction establishes the offender and the homicidal act, but the reviewed reporting does not identify a prior relationship or a separately adjudicated personal motive.

The attack in Gżira

Shortly after midnight on 18 January, Camilleri drove a BMW onto the pavement on Testaferrata Street and struck Kaya before the vehicle crashed into a food outlet. Witness testimony and CCTV formed part of the evidence described during the compilation proceedings.

After leaving the vehicle, Camilleri threw stones and attacked or threatened people nearby. Police used a conducted-energy weapon while taking him into custody. Tests reported in court showed alcohol and cocaine in his system; possession and driving-under-the-influence charges were among the offences he later admitted.

This summary omits graphic detail. The central established fact is that Kaya was deliberately killed while walking on a public pavement.

The charges and guilty plea

Camilleri initially pleaded not guilty. On 5 February 2024, more than a year into the compilation of evidence, he changed his plea and admitted wilful homicide plus thirteen other offences.

Those charges included causing serious injury to another woman and slight injury to a man, dangerous and reckless driving, driving under the influence, resisting arrest, attacking private citizens, property damage, drug possession, breach of the peace and violating probation conditions. The plea resolved criminal responsibility for the conduct charged without requiring a jury trial.

The 40-year sentence

The Attorney General and defence had jointly proposed 37 years in prison and a €2,000 fine. On 5 March 2024, Madam Justice Consuelo Scerri Herrera declined to follow that recommendation. She noted that the admission came after extensive evidence had already been compiled and imposed 40 years.

The court also fined Camilleri €5,000, ordered him to pay more than €20,000 in expert costs, confiscated the vehicle and permanently barred him from holding a driving licence. The judge explained that a life sentence was unavailable in the procedural posture because the admission came before a bill of indictment was issued.

Current status

Camilleri stands convicted on his guilty plea and is serving the 40-year sentence imposed in March 2024. No later decision overturning that conviction or sentence was located in the official-broadcaster and major Maltese news sources reviewed through September 2026.

The case is therefore classified as adjudicated. The classification does not minimize the continuing impact on Kaya’s family, who emphasized that a legal outcome could not restore the life they lost.

Frequently asked questions

Was the killing treated as an accident?

No. Camilleri pleaded guilty to wilful homicide, not merely to dangerous driving.

Why was the sentence higher than the proposed agreement?

The judge was not legally bound by the joint submission and considered the proposed punishment inadequate in the circumstances.

Did the case reach a jury?

No. The guilty plea during the compilation stage resolved the charges before a bill of indictment and jury trial.
