The robbery and killing
On October 23, 2013, Norazita Abu Talib was working at an AmBank branch in USJ Sentral, Subang Jaya. Court reporting established that La Ode Ardi Rasila, then employed as a security guard, fired a pump-action gun at Norazita while she was inside the bank's vault area and then took money from the branch.
CCTV became a central part of the prosecution case. At trial, the High Court rejected La Ode's explanation that the gun discharged without intentional firing, noting the weapon's operation and the footage showing him pointing it toward Norazita.
Arrest and trial
La Ode was arrested in November 2013 and prosecuted for murder and for firing a firearm while committing robbery with intent to cause death. The High Court heard evidence from prosecution witnesses, including weapons evidence and CCTV material, as well as the defence case.
On August 14, 2014, the Shah Alam High Court found him guilty. Under the law then in force, both the murder conviction and the firearms offence carried mandatory death sentences.
Appeals
The Court of Appeal upheld the convictions and death sentence in July 2015. La Ode then pursued a final ordinary appeal to the Federal Court.
On February 29, 2016, a five-judge Federal Court panel unanimously affirmed the conviction and death sentence. That ruling made the murder conviction final through the ordinary appellate process.
Malaysia's sentencing reform
Malaysia later abolished the mandatory death penalty and created a special review mechanism for prisoners already sentenced to death. The reform allowed the Federal Court to reconsider punishment without reopening guilt that had already been established in the ordinary appeals.
La Ode applied for such a sentence review. On July 15, 2024, the Federal Court set aside his death sentence and replaced it with 38 years' imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane. The court did not overturn his murder conviction.
