Eleven-year-old Nicky Verstappen disappeared from a summer camp in Limburg in August 1998. His body was found the following day in nearby woodland, launching an investigation that remained unresolved for two decades.

The Netherlands’ largest DNA screening

As forensic methods improved, investigators returned to biological material from the case. A large-scale voluntary DNA project involving thousands of men from the region generated a familial lead that pointed investigators toward Jos Brech.

Arrest and trial

Brech was arrested in Spain in 2018 after a Europe-wide search. The first trial produced convictions for kidnapping and sexual abuse but not manslaughter. On appeal in 2022, the court also convicted him of manslaughter and increased his sentence to 16 years.

Why the case changed cold-case thinking

The investigation demonstrated the power of large-scale familial DNA analysis when an unknown offender’s own profile is not in a database. It also renewed debate about privacy, proportionality and the safeguards needed when thousands of people are asked to provide genetic material.
